We’ve got bees!

GREAT NEWS! Though it was too late to get pictures, my boys and I were able to pick up two starter hives, truck them ~80 miles North, and install them last night! We didn’t look for queens, we just checker-boarded some empty foundation frames in, added a deep super, and refilled their feeders. One of… Read more »

“They cooked $37,000 of bees”

Today was the day we were supposed to get and install our two NUCs of honeybees. I just got a call from IFA (our supplier). The bees have been delivered. Unfortunately, the person doing the delivery apparently didn’t know the protocol, and unloaded the bees onto the asphalt – where they all cooked to death… Read more »

The Prius and the Useful idiot (video)

Now that Earth Day is behind us, here are some of my thoughts on the Toyota Prius, old trucks, and why buying a product to try and save the planet is wrong. I watched a video by Wranglerstar the other day, which got me thinking… “Hey, I drive a Prius! Am I a ‘useful idiot’?”

April 2015 Update (video)

A lot has happened in the last few years… It’s been quite some time since I updated you on where were are in our plans, and gave you a new video. I’m terribly sorry for all that! Hopefully this video will explain the delay and help you get caught up!

How and Why to plant Lombardy Poplar trees (video)

Almost everyone wants big, tall shade trees in their yard. These trees trade irrigation for: cooler temperatures, lower cooling bills, more enjoyable time spent out-of-doors, climbing “toys” for children, habitat for wildlife, a privacy screen, a noise barrier, a natural fence, a snow fence, and more! At the end of their live, they can be… Read more »

We won’t be irrigating the trees tonight

Last Saturday, when we looked at the trees we’d planted the week prior, we noticed that the ground in the bottom of our ditches was still a little damp. Water is essential when starting trees. Because it had rained (heavily!) that week, and the ground had dried out so much, we decided that we should head up… Read more »

Progress Update: a lot has been happening!

It’s been quite awhile since we updated the site with the progress of The Levi House. Here’s the progress so far: Found the “area” Purchased land Installed a bat box Unexpected delay Dug a well Installed pumps (plural) in the well Bought a shed and had it delivered Installed a flag holder for our American Flag (which we… Read more »

We’ve planted 60 trees!

We spend the entire day up on our property planting the last of the live stakes that we harvested two weeks ago. Previously we planted two 100-foot rows of 15 trees each, both fed by their own irrigation ditch. This time we dug one irrigation ditch with 3-foot spurs on either side. This, we hoped,… Read more »

Help me save the bees!

Last year I followed in the footsteps of both my late father, and late father-in-law, and took up beekeeping. We purchased one NUC and the tools and clothing that we needed to start into the lifestyle. All but one of my children is excited about keeping bees, and we take them out in their very… Read more »

Help me plant a “mini-forest”!

When I was a boy I helped my dad plant a forest on his property. Now that he has passed away I want to take up his tradition and share it with my children. We all know that trees are vital to the survival of our planet, yet each year new homes are built and… Read more »
